The Chic Capitalist

Hi, I'm Mikaela!

Let me be the first to welcome you to my blog, The Chic Capitalist!  I created my blog in 2023 as a creative outlet to share my passion for investing and personal finance.

I first developed my love for investing, and specifically the stock market, while in college.  Prior to that, my exposure to the world of equity investing was practically nonexistent.  I grew up in a middle class household where stocks were only purchased as part of a retirement account.  My life changed when I purchased my first stock at the age of 20.  Suddenly, I was receiving recurring dividend income and cashing out on thousands of dollars in capital gains.  My secret?  Strategic value investing It’s no get-rich quick scheme, but it’s a surefire way to amass wealth over time.

My interest in the broader realm of personal finance came later and the story there isn’t quite so rosy.  My first job out of college was at a big 4 public accounting firm.  I worked 12-14 hour days and spent another 2 hours on top of that commuting, all while studying for my CPA license.  Needless to say, I was severely depressed and burnt out.  To cope, I developed a shopping addiction.  Every weekend I’d buy a new outfit, thinking all the while that a new outfit would help me develop the confidence and positive self-worth I sought.  But it often had the opposite effect.  Talk about having poor relationship with money!  As soon as I quit that job I committed to rediscovering myself; in the process, I found a balance between saving and spending.

Based on this experience, I’m a staunch believer that living a fiscally responsible lifestyle can drastically improve quality of life.

Through this platform, I hope to teach you how to feel confident in your financial decisions, so that you can live a richer, fuller, more meaningful life.
